What we do


​Cardew Hay/Barn 21 LLC is a Arizona Alfalfa hay brokerage company. We source, procure and deliver alfalfa, bermuda, teff, orchard, paca verde, Timothy, straw, and hay when it’s available and looks good. We are not farmers and do not grow our alfalfa own hay. However, we have been in the hay business since 2001 and for more than the 20 years we've been in business we have learned thing or two about quality alfalfa hay and customer satisfaction.

Cardew Hay/Barn 21 goes through a selective process identifying the best hay available, from growers we have long-standing established relationships with, and then make it available to discerning individuals looking for a safe, premium quality alfalfa hay to feed their livestock. Like all commodity products, every alfalfa hay cutting will always be a bit different- that's just a fact of farming and the nature of growing crops. However, while no one can guarantee that your hay will always be exactly the same, we will guarantee that the alfalfa we provide is the best available - organic & GMO free hay available (on a limited basis), too! ​Alfalfa. The nutritional value of alfalfa can vary dramatically. Elements such as weather conditions, when, where and how it’s cut, as well as how the hay is stored and shipped are all  vital to alfalfa's nutritional value.

Location is an important factor when it comes to growing quality alfalfa. Climates that are too wet, too dry, too hot or too cold produce a far less consistent product.  Not only is the consistency affected, but also the vary nature of the area won't support year round production. ​Because of these factors Arizona has been considered by many nutritional experts as the “Alfalfa Sweet Spot”.

Why choose Alfalfa?

Alfalfa (A perennial forage legume), has the highest nutritional value of all forages. Additionally, because of its highly digestible nutritional content, alfalfa is considered to be the premier of forages, above all others, when it comes to horses. 

Overall, the nutrition of alfalfa is:

  • Lower in fat (*Crude Fat – Min 1.5%)
  • High in digestible fiber (*Crude Fiber – Max 30%)
  • Lower sugar (*Sugar - Max 2.5%)

  • Lower in moisture (*Moisture – Max 12%)

Alfalfa is particularly high in energy, is an outstanding source for vitamins and minerals plus is more palatable than most grass hays. Alfalfa is also high in vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K.
